Why do people not accept track as a real, tough, true sport?

ok this is so lame, im being forced to run the mile in my pe class on the same day we have races, adn it would end up i would run the mile, then leave to the race, not having any time to stock up on carbs or anything. i run the mile, the 400, and the 4x4, and my pe teacher has her favorites, which apparently i am not one of. i dont wanna brag or anything, but i am a good student, lots of friends, and i think i am a pretty nice person, yet my teacher has favorites that are kinda snotty, think they are better than others. one friend of mine claims she is so in shape cuz shes on varsity softball, but she cant run a 7 min mile. then i tell her how tough our track practices are, etc. and shes like oh thats nothing. why do people do that? track is so tough. your body has so much to withstand because of the repeatative movements and stress on your body. it is NOT easy. i suggest people that believe it is easy to try it, so you can get a feel before you diss a challenging sport. Why do people not accept track as a real, tough, true sport?
I never got that impression - seems to me that people generally respect track %26amp; field. I think it is actually the truest test of athletic ability. To the extent it does not test reflexes, aiming, etc., it more than makes up for that by testing strength and endurance to the maximum and with no teammates or anything else to determine your success - unless you are doing relays. Unlike nearly all other sports, running requires nothing but yourself.

Think of just about any other sport, and you'll find people at the top levels who are not in great shape if not out of shape. You'll never see that on the track.

Running is as easy or as hard as you want to make it. So yes, you can go out for a Sunday jog or you can torture yourself or anything in between. I've done it for 30 years and don't regret it one bit. I don't think it is an exaggeration to say its physical benefits are enormous. Why do people not accept track as a real, tough, true sport?
I can understand negative feedback about track %26amp; field being the truest test of athletic ability. It should be combined with ';skill'; sports to be a complete athlete. Jim Thorpe is a good example. He played many sports and said his favorite was football, but achieved most in track %26amp; field.

Wow! I wish I had problems like yours. To be young...
I play basktball, and I'm doing Track this year. Track is definetly the harder of the 2 sports, as it involves a lot more punishment on your body. Nobody thinks of sports outside the big three: Basketball, Baseball, and Football.
i played soccer in high school and got the same things... soccer players are referred to oftentimes as ';grass fairies';, and that is obviously an unfair, biased, and unjustified term for anyone who knows anything about the sport. i think people don't take track seriously b/c it's mainly just running in their minds. i hate running just to run and don't understand people that run for fun... no offense. i think that's why people don't respect it - they think ';oh, it's just running';. good luck though
A lot of people think a sport with out a ball isn't a real sport. Like some people believe girls don't play real sports.
Track is a tough sport
