Is Auto Racing a true sport?

Pros: Competition, takes some skill

Cons: Any body can drive a car at high speeds, no real athletisim (just sit and drive), mechanical creating most of the energy (as opposed to cycling where the cyclist creates most of the force)

I for one (obviously by my pros and cons list) do not think auto racing is a sport. Yes it is on ESPN and yes it has a lot of fans, but anyone who is willing to drive at 200 MPH can do it. Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon are not athletes in my opinion. Is Auto Racing a true sport?
I doubt just anybody could do it. There is a lot of heat and G-force generated during a race which is hard on the body. You may also be killed or crippled. There is also the stress of being surrounded by several other cars nearby. I do hear of horrible accidents that occur when some kid thinks he has the skills to drive at high-speeds on the street.

I find that most people who do actually think they can drive that fast never have but like to talk a good game. It's called ';benchracing';.

Now this ';Drifting'; thing is what I question! Is Auto Racing a true sport?
no
yes it is, could u sweat ur balls of and still walk after 3 hrs in the hot car?
No, NASCAR and all auto racing is a waste of television airspace and gasoline.

It is a psudo-sport that the south is obsessed about for some odd reason.
yes.
